Kellen's How to Guide: Fun with Assessments

Yesterday we had a home visit from our local DSHS caseworker to see "if" Kellen still qualifies for services because of his disability. It took two hours of answering question after question. Kellen was a real trooper as he sat at the kitchen table with us.

Here is his guide on how to make assessments fun, fun fun.

1. When the caseworker arrives, come out of your bedroom wearing only boxers. Finally get dressed after mom reminds you 3-4 times.

2. When mom introduces you to aforementioned caseworker, kiss her hand. (A little charm never hurts)

3. Every time mom answers a question "no", say "yes" in a loud voice. Do the opposite if mom answers a question "yes".

4. There is a numbered rating scale for almost every answer. Every time you hear mom say the numbers, start singing Tim McGraw's latest hit. "1-2-3 Like a bird I sing, Cause you've given me the most beautiful set of wings". Extra points for singing this loudly and off-key.

5. When your caseworker asks the question, "Does he have attention-seeking behaviors?". This is a really good time to poke mom and kiss her ten times on the cheek.

I think the evaluations are so trying; I really have to remind myself to be patient. Avery doesn't have Kellen's level of skill yet, but in his own way, he expresses his dissatisfation with them, too...things like raspberry blowing, shaking his head no a lot, and frequently waving "Bye Bye". As if saying it would make it so!
