Meet the Focker

Profound thoughts of the day: If Kellen says a swear word and he pronounces it wrong, is it still swearing? How about if he doesn't know the meaning of the word, but just knows it's powerful?

Yesterday my nephew got married. Since he we was going to get married in the same town my parents live in, we thought it to be a perfect opportunity to have Kellen stay with his grandparents for the ceremony, then we'd swing by and pick him up for the reception. With his moods lately it can be risky to take him just about anywhere, but especially unfamiliar places where he has to sit and be quiet.

We should have known to abort the plan when he balked at leaving Grandma's, but we know how much he loves seeing his cousins, and this would be a great opportunity. He was anxious right from the start. He sat with us but didn't really want to interact with anyone. I gave him my digital camera and he pointed it across the table and took 30 pictures of one of his girl cousins (with flash!) before I finally coaxed it away from him. When we tried to get up from the table to mingle a bit, he globbed on to his sister and wouldn't let go....again...anxiety.

When it was time for the bride to throw the bouquet, he wouldn't let go of his sister so she could join in. Finally, his dad ran interference so that DQ could get away, but he was none too happy about that turn of events. Finally we decided to make our graceful exit. As we walked across the room to the exit, people kept stopping us to say hello. Kellen was getting more and more agitated. By then he had his dollar in his hand which he was planning on buying a soda with. I tell you, nobody gets between my son and his soda.

The last straw was just before the exit. My brother-in-law wanted to introduce us to his brother who was in town from Montana. As soon as my brother-in-law introduces Kellen, Kellen yells, "FOCKER" in his most manly voice.

Call me a wimp, but I did not stick around to see what happened after that. I kept walking through the door and into the parking lot...sigh.

Exactly what I would have done...made haste toward the nearest exit...and don't look back!
